Whole Life Insurance
Guaranteed lifetime coverage that builds guaranteed cash value.
How it works
- You pay a fixed premium for life (or for a set number of years) and the policy stays in force as long as premiums are paid.
- Part of each premium builds cash value that grows at a guaranteed rate, tax-deferred.
- Participating policies from mutual carriers can also pay dividends, which can buy more coverage or reduce premiums.
- You can borrow against the cash value while alive; the death benefit is paid income-tax free to your beneficiaries.
A real-world example
Denise, 58, wants to make sure her funeral and final bills never fall on her kids and wants to leave each grandchild something. A $75,000 whole life policy does both with a premium that never changes.
Best for
- People who want coverage that never expires
- Final expense and legacy planning
- Parents and grandparents who want to lock in coverage for children
- Anyone who values guarantees over market upside
Strengths
- Coverage for your whole life, premiums never rise
- Guaranteed cash value growth plus potential dividends
- Can be used for final expenses, estate liquidity, or leaving a legacy
- Cash value can be accessed via policy loans
Trade-offs
- Much higher premium than term for the same death benefit
- Cash value grows slowly in the early years
- Less flexible than IUL on premium and death benefit
Whole Life questions
Is whole life a good investment?
It is insurance first. The cash value is a conservative, guaranteed asset, not a substitute for a retirement account. It works best when you need permanent coverage.
What is final expense insurance?
A small whole life policy ($5K to $50K) designed to cover funeral costs and final bills, usually with simplified underwriting.
Can I stop paying and keep coverage?
Some policies are paid up after 10 or 20 years, or you can use cash value to keep a reduced paid-up policy.
