Term Life Insurance

The most coverage for the least money, for the years your family depends on you most.

How it works

  1. You choose a coverage amount (the death benefit) and a term length, usually 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years.
  2. You pay a level monthly premium that never changes for the entire term.
  3. If you pass away during the term, your beneficiaries receive the full death benefit, income-tax free.
  4. When the term ends, coverage stops (or can be renewed or converted to permanent coverage, depending on the policy).
What it usually costs. A healthy 35-year-old can often get $500,000 of 20-year term coverage for roughly $25 to $45 per month. Illustrative ranges for healthy non-smokers; actual premiums are set by the carrier after underwriting.

A real-world example

Maria, 34, has two kids and a $340K mortgage. She chooses a $750,000 30-year term policy so her family could pay off the house, replace her income and fund college if anything happened to her.

Best for

  • Parents with kids at home
  • Households that rely on one or two incomes
  • Anyone who wants $250K to $2M+ of coverage on a budget
  • People who want simple, predictable premiums

Strengths

  • Lowest cost per dollar of coverage
  • Locked-in premium for the whole term
  • Simple to understand, easy to compare
  • Many policies can be converted to permanent coverage later without a new medical exam

Trade-offs

  • No cash value; if you outlive the term, there is no payout
  • Renewing after the term is expensive
  • Rates rise with age, so waiting costs more

Term Life questions

How much term coverage do I need?

A common rule of thumb is 10 to 15 times your annual income, plus debts like a mortgage, minus savings. Lance walks through this with you on the discovery call.

What term length should I pick?

Match the term to your longest obligation: the years until your kids are independent, your mortgage is paid off, or you retire.

Do I need a medical exam?

Many carriers now offer no-exam or accelerated underwriting for healthy applicants. It depends on age, coverage amount and health history; Lance will tell you which carriers fit before you apply.
